This is a summary of the results of the Overnight Travel Statistics Survey for December 2018 (second preliminary report), and January 2019 (first preliminary report), as well as the preliminary annual value for 2018.

1. Total number of overnight guests
--In December 2018, the total number of overnight guests was 41.70 million, an increase of 3.7% from the same month of the previous year. In January 2019, the total number of overnight guests was 38.60 million, an increase of 8.0% from the same month of the previous year.
--The total number of Japanese overnight guests for December 2018 was up 1.5% from the same month of the previous year and for January 2019 the numbers were up 4.7% for the same month of the previous year.
--The total number of international visitor overnights for December 2018 was 7.67 million, an increase of 14.8% from the same month of the previous year and the highest value for December since the survey began. For January 2019, the numbers were up 23.9% from the same month of the previous year.
2. Room occupancy rates
--The overall room occupancy rate for December 2018 was 58.3% and for January 2019, it was 53.4%.
--During December 2018, in the prefectures which had room occupancy rates of over 80%, city hotels had the highest rates in 9 places (2017: 4), business hotels in 2, (2017: 2) and resort hotels in 2 (2017: 2).
--Osaka Prefecture accounted for 79.6% of the total occupancy rate, which was the highest nationwide.
Annual value (preliminary) for 2018 1. Total number of overnight visitors
--The total number of overnight guests was 509.02 million, down 0.1% from the previous year.
--The total number of Japanese overnight guests was 420.43 million, down 2.2% from the previous year.
--The total number of international overnights was 88.59 million (up 11.2% from the previous year), the highest value since the survey began.
2. Room occupancy rates
--The overall room occupancy rate was 61.1%. By facility type, city hotels (79.9%), business hotels (75.3%), resort hotels (58.3%) and ryokan (39%) having the highest rates after the expansion of the survey target in 2010. (* 1).
--In the prefectures which had room occupancy rates of over 80%, city hotels had the highest rates in 10 places (2017: 9), business hotels in 5, (2017: 3) and resort hotels in 2 (20172: 2).
In Tokyo, the overall occupancy rate was 80.3%, the highest nationwide, with 84.8% in business hotels and 57.5% in ryokans as the highest inn values nationwide.
*1: In the beginning of the survey in 2007, only accommodation facilities with 10 or more employees were included in the survey, but from the survey from the second quarter of 2010, the surveyed subjects were changed to include accommodation facilities with 9 or fewer employees.
