This is a summary of the results of the Overnight Travel Statistics Survey for September 2018 (second preliminary report) and October 2018 (first preliminary report).

1. Total number of overnight guests

In September 2018, the total number of overnight guests was 42.16 million, an increase of 0.0% from the same month of the previous year. In October, the total number of overnight guests was 45.95 million, an increase of 4.8% from the same month of the previous year.

 

--The total number of Japanese overnight guests for September was down 1.1% compared with the same month of the previous year and the total number for October was up 2.8% from the same month of the previous year.

 

--The total number of international visitor overnight guests for September was 6.33 million, an increase of 6.6% from the same month of the previous year and the highest value ever recorded for September since the survey began. In October, the number was up 15.0% from the same month of the previous year.

2. Room occupancy rates

--The overall room occupancy rate for September 2018 was 61.7%. The rate for October was 64.9%.

 

--In the prefectures which had room occupancy rates of over 80% in September 2018, city hotels had the highest rates in 11 prefectures (September 2017: 13), business hotels in 10 (September 2017: 10) and resort hotels in 2 (September 2017: 4).

 

--In overall room occupancy rates, Tokyo had the highest nationwide at 81.8%.
