Results of the Consumption Trends of International Visitors to Japan Survey for the January-March Quarter of 2016

~Due to the large increase in the number of foreign visitors to Japan, total consumption was maintained at the 900 billion yen level, but the consumption per visitor decreased~
--Expenditure by international visitors to Japan for the January-March quarter of 2016 was 930.5 billion yen, an increase of 31.7% from the same period of the previous year (706.5 billion yen).
--Travel expenditure per international visitor to Japan for the January-March quarter of 2016 was 161,746 yen. Compared to the same period from the previous year (171,025 yen), this showed a decrease of 5.4%.
Outline of the results of the survey on the consumption trends of international visitors to Japan
1. Overall travel expenditure by international visitors
--Overall travel expenditure of international visitors to Japan during the January-March quarter of 2016 was 930.5 billion yen, a 31.7% increase from the same quarter of the previous year (706.5 billion yen).
--Looking at travel expenditure by country and region: China was the highest at 390.1 billion yen (41.9% of the total). Taiwan was next at 133.9 billion yen (14.4%), then South Korea at 99.1 billion yen (10.6%), Hong Kong at 77.9 billion yen (8.4%) and the United States at 38.3 billion yen (4.1%). Five countries accounted for 79.5% of the total.
2. Travel expenditure per international visitor to Japan
--Travel expenditure per international visitor to Japan was 161,746 yen. Compared to the same period from the previous year (171,025 yen), this showed a decrease of 5.4%.
--Looking at per person travel expenditure by country and region: Australia was the highest at 285,060 yen (an increase of 15.1% from the same period of the previous year). Next was China at 264,997 yen, a decrease of 11.8% from the same period of the previous year.
