Results of the Consumption Trends of International Visitors to Japan Survey for the April-June Quarter of 2016

--Expenditure by international visitors to Japan was 953.3 billion yen, an increase of 7.2% from the same period of the previous year (889.3 billion yen).
 
--Travel expenditure per international visitor to Japan for the April-June quarter of 2016 was 159,930 yen. Compared to the same period from the previous year (177,546 yen), this showed a decrease of 9.9%.

Outline of the results of the survey on the consumption trends of international visitors to Japan

1. Travel expenditure per international visitor to Japan

--Travel expenditure per international visitor to Japan was 159,930 yen. Compared to the same period from the previous year (177,546 yen), this showed a decrease of 9.9%.
 
--Looking at per person travel expenditure by country and region: Viet Nam was the highest at 238,000 yen (up 13.7% from the same period of the previous year), followed by Australia at 234,000 yen (a decrease of 4.5% from the same period of the previous year). Next was China at 220,000 yen, a decrease of 22.9% from the same period of the previous year (285,000 yen).

2. Overall travel expenditure by international visitors

--Overall travel expenditure of international visitors to Japan during the April-June quarter of 2016 was 953.3 billion yen, a 7.2% increase from the same quarter of the previous year (889.3 billion yen).
 
--The number of international visitors to Japan was 5.96 million, a 19.0% increase from the same period of the previous year (5.01 million).
 
--Looking at travel expenditure by country and region: China was the highest at 353.0 billion yen (37.0% of the total), followed by Taiwan at 142.7 billion yen (15.0%). Next was South Korea at 69.5 billion yen (7.3%), the United States at 66.9 billion yen (7.0%) and Hong Kong at 63.7 billion yen (6.7%). Five countries accounted for 73.0% of the total.
