Last Update : 2016/6/30

This is a summary of the results of the Overnight Travel Statistics Survey for April 2016 (second preliminary report), and May 2016 (first preliminary report).

1. Total number of overnight guests

--In April 2016, the total number of overnight guests was 38.50 million, an increase of 1.7% from the same month of the previous year and the highest number for April since the survey began in 2007. In May 2016, the total number of overnight guests was 40.52 million, a decrease of 5.6% from the same month of the previous year.

--Due to the inconvenient day line-up of Golden Week 2016, growth in the first half (end of April) was larger than in the second half (beginning of May). In addition, with the impact of the Kumamoto earthquake, there was no change in the total number of Japanese overnight guests compared with the same month of the previous year. In May 2016 there was a 7.0% decrease compared with the same month of the previous year.

--Following an increase in the number of international visitors to Japan, the total number of international overnight guests for April 2016 was up 10.1% from the same month of the previous year. There was a 3.6% increase in May. The high occupancy rate in the recent three major metropolitan areas, the accompanying rise in room prices, and the impact of the Kumamoto earthquake may have led to slower growth in the number of overnight guests.

2. Room occupancy rates

--The overall room occupancy rate for April 2016 was 58.4%. Since 2011, the start of the current survey method, it was the highest occupancy rate ever for April.
In addition, the business hotel rate was 72.9%, the resort hotel rate was 53.9% and the ryokan rate was 33.5%, which were the highest rates ever for April.
The overall rate for May was 57.9%.

--In the prefectures which had room occupancy rates of over 80% in April, city hotels had the highest rates in 13 prefectures (April 2015: 12), business hotels in 8 (April 2015: 8) and resort hotels in 4 (April 2015: 3).

--Particularly, in Osaka prefecture, the overall occupancy rate continued to be high with business hotels at 88.8%, city hotels at 88.0%, and resort hotels at 83.4%.
