Overnight Travel Statistics Survey (second preliminary report for May 2016, first preliminary report for June 2016)

This is a summary of the results of the Overnight Travel Statistics Survey for May 2016 (second preliminary report), and June 2016 (first preliminary report).

1. Total number of overnight guests

--In May 2016, the total number of overnight guests was 40.40 million, a decrease of 5.9% from the same month of the previous year. In June 2016, the total number of overnight guests was 37.71 million, an increase of 0.7% from the same month of the previous year.
 
--Due to the inconvenient day line-up of Golden Week and the impact of the Kumamoto earthquake, the total number of Japanese overnight guests was down 7.2% compared with the same month of the previous year.
 
For June, the number was down 1.4% from the same month of the previous year.
 
--Following an increase in the number of international visitors to Japan, the total number of international overnight guests for May 2016 was up 2.5% from the same month of the previous year.
 
In June 2016, the number was up 13.1%.
 

2. Room occupancy rates

--The overall room occupancy rate for May 2016 was 57.6%.
The overall rate for June was 58.0%.
 
--In the prefectures which had room occupancy rates of over 80% in May, city hotels had the highest rates in 8 prefectures (May 2015: 18), business hotels in 2 (May 2015: 11) and resort hotels in 1 (May 2015: 3).
 
--Particularly, in Osaka prefecture, the overall occupancy rate continued to be high with city hotels at 83.9%, business hotels at 79.9% and resort hotels at 79.7%.

In Kyoto prefecture, the city hotel and business hotel room occupancy rates were the highest at 90.6% and 85.8%, respectively.
 
--On the other hand, in the Kyushu area, due to the influence from the Kumamoto Earthquake, the overall room occupancy rate was 53.6% (a 5.5% decrease from the same month of the previous year). Looking at the numbers by accommodation type, the room occupancy rates showed a decrease with resort hotels at 39.1% (down 21.2% from the same month of the previous year) and city hotels at 67.5% (down 12.2% from the same month of the previous year).
