Overnight Travel Statistics Survey (second preliminary report for June 2016, first preliminary report for July 2016)

This is a summary of the results of the Overnight Travel Statistics Survey for June 2016 (second preliminary report), and July 2016 (first preliminary report).

1. Total number of overnight guests

--In June 2016, the total number of overnight guests was 37.00 million, a decrease of 1.2% from the same month of the previous year. In July 2016, the total number of overnight guests was 45.79 million, an increase of 2.2% from the same month of the previous year.

It was the highest number for July since the survey began.
 

--The total number of Japanese overnight guests for June 2016 was slightly down 2.9% from the same month of the previous year and for July 2016, the number was up 0.4% from the same month of the previous year.


--The total number of international overnight guests for June 2016 was up 9.0% from the same month of the previous year, and the increase continued in July 2016 with the number up 13.2%.


--In the Kyushu area, the total number of overnight guests for May was down 18.4% and for June down 7.7% from the same months of the previous year but as of the first preliminary report for July, the number has recovered to only a 0.6% decrease.

2. Room occupancy rates

--The overall room occupancy rate for June 2016 was 57.2%.
The overall rate for July was 63.4%.
 
--In the prefectures which had room occupancy rates of over 80% in June, city hotels had the highest rates in 7 prefectures (June 2015: 13), business hotels in 3 (June 2015: 4) and resort hotels in 1 (June 2015: 2).
 
--Particularly, in Osaka prefecture, the overall occupancy rate continued to be high with city hotels at 86.1%, business hotels at 83.9% and resort hotels at 78.8%.
 
In Kyoto prefecture, the city hotel and business hotel room occupancy rates continued to be high at 90.6% and 85.7%, respectively.
 
--In the Kyushu area, the overall room occupancy rate was 52.5% (a 0.2% decrease from the same month of the previous year). Although influence from the Kumamoto earthquake remained, looking at the numbers by accommodation type, the room occupancy rates showed a tendency toward improvement, for example the city hotel rate was 68.2% (down 3.7% from the same month of the previous year).
 
※The overall room occupancy rate for May in Kyushu was 53.6% (down 5.5% from the same month of the previous year), and the city hotel rate was 67.5% (down 12.2% from the same month of the previous year).
