Overnight Travel Statistics Survey (second preliminary report for September 2016, first preliminary report for October 2016)

This is a summary of the results of the Overnight Travel Statistics Survey for September 2016 (second preliminary report), and October 2016 (first preliminary report).

1. Total number of overnight guests

--In September 2016, the total number of overnight guests was 41.38 million, a decrease of 6.0% from the same month of the previous year. In October 2016, the total number of overnight guests was 45.05 million, an increase of 0.3% from the same month of the previous year.

--The total number of Japanese overnight guests for September 2016 was down 7.3% from the same month of the previous year and for October 2016, the number was down 0.3% from the same month of the previous year.

--The total number of international overnight guests for September 2016 was up 3.7% from the same month of the previous year, and in October 2016, the number was up 4.4% from the same month of the previous year.

2. Room occupancy rates

--The overall room occupancy rate for September 2016 was 62.0%. 
The overall rate for October 2016 was 65.0%.
 
--In the prefectures which had room occupancy rates of over 80% in September, city hotels had the highest rates in 12 prefectures (September 2015: 13), business hotels in 9 (September 2015: 8) and resort hotels in 3 (September 2015: 4).
 
--Particularly, in Osaka prefecture, the resort hotel occupancy rate was 95.6%, the highest nationwide.  The occupancy rates of city hotels at 88.2% and business hotels at 81.9% continued to be high.
In Kyoto prefecture, the city hotel room occupancy rate was 89.7% and the business hotel rate was 85.8%, the highest rates nationwide.
 
--In the Kyushu area, there was an increase from the same month the previous year in five prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Kumamoto, Oita, and Kagoshima (the overall room occupancy rate in the Kyushu area was 61.2%, a 1.1% increase from the same month of the previous year).
