Overnight Travel Statistics Survey (second preliminary report for July 2016, first preliminary report for August 2016)

This is a summary of the results of the Overnight Travel Statistics Survey for July 2016 (second preliminary report), and August 2016 (first preliminary report).

1. Total number of overnight guests

--In July 2016, the total number of overnight guests was 44.61 million, a slight decrease of 0.4% from the same month of the previous year. In August 2016, the total number of overnight guests was 55.87 million, a decrease of 1.0% from the same month of the previous year.

 

--The total number of Japanese overnight guests for July 2016 was down 2.0% from the same month of the previous year and for August 2016 the numbers were down 0.9% from the same month of the previous year.

 

--The total number of international overnight guests for July 2016 increased 8.9% from the same month of the previous year, showing an increase for 42 consecutive months. However, in August there was a decrease of 1.8% compared with the same month of the previous year.

 

--The total number of overnight guests in the Kyushu area showed recovery: the number was down 18.4% in May, down 7.7% in June and down 2.8% in July.

2. Room Occupancy Rates

--The overall room occupancy rate for July 2016 was 61.9%. 
The overall rate for August 2016 was 69.5%.
 
--In the prefectures which had room occupancy rates of over 80%:
city hotels had the highest rates in 11 prefectures (July 2015: 16),
business hotels in 6 (July 2015: 10) and
resort hotels in 4 (July 2015: 5).
 
--Particularly, in Osaka prefecture, the room occupancy rates continued to be high with resort hotels at 91.1%, city hotels at 89.5% and business hotels at 88.4%, the highest rates nationwide.
 
--In the Kyushu area, there was an increase from the same month the previous year in three prefectures: Oita, Miyazaki and Kagoshima, but the overall room occupancy rate in the Kyushu area was 57.1%, a 0.4% decrease from the same month of the previous year.
