Results of the Consumption Trends of International Visitors to Japan Survey for the July-September Quarter of 2016
~Expenditure by international visitors to Japan decreased by 2.9% from the same period of the previous year to 971.7 billion yen~
--Expenditure by international visitors to Japan was 971.7 billion yen. This shows a decrease of 2.9% compared to the same period of the previous year, which was 1.0009 trillion yen. The decrease in the comparison to the same period of the previous year was the first in 19 quarters (since the October-December quarter of 2011).
--Travel expenditure per international visitor to Japan was 155,133 yen. Compared to the same period from the previous year (187,166 yen) this showed a decrease of 17.1%.
--On a local currency basis, per capita travel expenditure of the top five highest travel expenditure markets (China, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong and the US) increased compared to the same period of the previous year, except for Hong Kong. The decrease in per capita travel expenditure based on Japanese yen can be attributed to the strong effect of the trend toward yen appreciation.

1. Travel expenditure per international visitor to Japan
--Travel expenditure per international visitor to Japan was 155,133 yen. This was a 17.1% decrease from the same period of the previous year, (187,166).
--Looking at travel expenditure by country and region: China was the highest at 228,000 yen (down 18.9% from the same period of the previous year). Next was Russia at 222,000 yen (an increase of 17.5% from the same period of the previous year), then Italy at 215,000 yen (a decrease of 8.2% from the same period of the previous year).
2. Overall travel expenditure by international visitors
--Overall travel expenditure of international visitors to Japan during the July-September quarter of 2016 was 971.7 billion yen, a 2.9% decrease from the same quarter of the previous year (1.0009 trillion yen).
--Looking at travel expenditure by country and region: China was the highest at 439.8 billion yen (45.3% of the total). Next was Taiwan at 129.2 billion yen (13.3%), then South Korea at 90.8 billion yen (9.3%), Hong Kong at 69.9 billion yen (7.2%), and the United States at 53.2 billion yen (5.5%). Five countries accounted for 80.6% of the total.
