Overnight Travel Statistics Survey(second preliminary report for October 2016, first preliminary report for November 2016)

This is a summary of the October results of the Overnight Travel Statistics Survey (second preliminary report for October 2016, first preliminary report for November 2016)

1. Total number of overnight guests

--In October 2016, the total number of overnight guests was 43.24 million, a decrease of 3.7% from the same month of the previous year. In November 2016, the total number of overnight guests was 41.30 million, a decrease of 0.5% from the same month of the previous year.  
 
--The total number of Japanese overnight guests for October 2016 was down 3.9% from the same month of the previous year and for November 2016 the numbers were down 0.8% from the same month of the previous year.
 
--The total number of international overnight guests for October 2016 was down 2.4% from the same month of the previous year and for November 2016, the numbers were up 2.1% from the same month of the previous year.

2. Room occupancy rates

-- The room occupancy rate for October 2016 was 63.5%. The rate for November 2016 was 62.5%.
 
--In the prefectures which had room occupancy rates of over 80%, city hotels had the highest rates in 17 prefectures (October 2015: 20), business hotels in 12 (October 2015: 15) and resort hotels in 5 (October 2015: 4).
 
--Particularly, in Osaka prefecture, the resort hotel occupancy rate was 95.7%, the highest nationwide, and the occupancy rates for city hotels at 89.7% and business hotels at 87.4% continued to be high.
In Kyoto prefecture, the city hotel occupancy rate was 90.6% and the business hotel rate was 87.4%, the highest rates nationwide.
 
--In the Kyushu area, there was an increase from the same month the previous year in four prefectures: Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, and Kagoshima.
(the room occupancy rate in the Kyushu area as a whole was 61.6%, no difference from the same month of the previous year)
